Tessera

Privacy policy

Last updated 2026-10-28

Tessera is a free, open-source web app for designing printable label sheets. This policy says what happens to your data when you use it. Short version: your documents stay with you, and Tessera has no accounts, no analytics and no cookies.

Who runs Tessera

Tessera is run by an individual maintainer as an open-source project. To ask a question or make a request about your data, open an issue on the project's GitHub issues page.

What we collect

Nothing. There is no account or sign-up. Tessera does not use analytics, cookies, tracking or advertising. Settings such as theme, language and the layout of the toolbar are kept in your browser's local storage on your device and are never sent anywhere. The app can also keep a copy of itself in your browser so that it works offline.

Where your documents live

Documents are stored in your browser (IndexedDB) on your device, or in a place you choose: a folder on your computer (through the browser's File System Access API), your own GitHub gists or repositories, or your own Google Drive. The operator of Tessera never receives a copy of your documents.

Sharing

Sharing is something you start and confirm yourself. A shared gist can be read by anyone who has the link. A shared Google Drive file gets the permission "anyone with the link can view", and Tessera asks you to confirm before it does that. You can stop sharing from the same dialog. People who open a link load the file directly from GitHub or Google (Drive files with an API key that works only for this site); the request does not pass through Tessera's servers.

Hosting and other services

This site is served by Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver the site and protect it from abuse; see Cloudflare's privacy policy. When you sign in or load a file, your browser talks directly to GitHub or Google, and their own policies apply: GitHub's privacy statement and Google's privacy policy. Fonts and icons are served from this site, not from a third party.

Google API Services User Data Policy

Tessera's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

In practice: data received from Google is used only to open and save your Tessera documents in your Drive and to show your account name. It is not transferred to anyone, not used for advertising and not read by people.

AI agents

Tessera has optional tools that let an AI assistant in your browser edit the open document (WebMCP). They run in your browser, are off by default and work only after you switch them on in Settings. Tessera does not send your document to any AI service.

Children

Tessera is a general-purpose tool and collects no personal data, from children or anyone else.

Self-hosted copies

Anyone can run their own copy of Tessera. The operator of a copy decides how it is hosted and logged. This policy covers only the official site.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with a new date at the top.
